Riding Meetings
Surrey Secondary Phase Council facilitates six sets of Riding Meetings each year, with one meeting for each Riding every half term. These meetings provide a regular forum for headteachers and senior leaders to collaborate, discuss shared challenges and address local priorities.
Purpose and Benefits
Networking and Peer Support
Connect with colleagues from nearby schools to share experience, challenges and practical solutions.
Information Sharing
Keep informed about important local and national developments, policy changes and initiatives affecting Surrey schools.
Access to Local Authority Representatives
Engage directly with representatives from the local authority, ensuring that the views and concerns of secondary schools are heard.
Collaborative Problem Solving
Work with colleagues on shared priorities, including recruitment, curriculum, inclusion, SEND, attendance and student wellbeing.
Strategic Input
Help shape the agenda for Full Phase Council meetings and contribute to wider discussions and decisions affecting Surrey’s secondary schools.
Meeting Structure and Format
Each Riding Meeting follows an agreed agenda designed to support purposeful discussion and clear follow up. A typical meeting may include:
• Local and national education updates
• Updates from the local authority and other partners
• Guest presentations on current priorities
• Roundtable discussion and sharing of effective practice
• Review of previous actions and agreement of next steps
When and Where?
Frequency: Six meetings each year, scheduled every half term.
Venues: Meetings are hosted by schools within each Riding, with arrangements varying according to local needs and preferences.
Format: Meetings are normally held in person, with online attendance or virtual meetings arranged where appropriate.
